Known for her warm welcomes and open, honest class discussions, Kova Herrick makes her students feel right at home.
But Acadiana High has only been home to her for a short time. As Herrick explains, this is not only her second year at Acadiana High, but her second teaching, ever.
With just a couple of years under her belt, Herrick is sure she is finally where she was always meant to be. In the classroom.
“I really decided this is something I wanted to do,” says Herrick. “It is something I thought about thirty years ago but I never did. So when the opportunity presented itself, I went back to school and here I am.”
That feeling of comfort is one she hopes her students can find any time they enter her English class.
“I like to think this is a place they can come and maybe forget or maybe put aside some of their issues. To just hang out and enjoy the class a little bit.”
And though it comes as a shock to her, Herrick’s students agree that she is already an LEF award-worthy teacher.
Herrick says she’s still surprised, “I really am.”
