Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Lafayette and surrounding communities are participating in marches, sermons, and moments of reflection to celebrate the lasting legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

KATC’s Abby Breidenbach was LIVE at the King Center in Lafayette for a preview of today’s celebration.

Today’s celebration will consist of a flag ceremony and prayer breakfast this morning.

A panel of community professionals will assemble at the King Center today to offer insight to young adults on law enforcement, law professionals, and first-hand experiences interacting with these professionals.

The celebration will end with a speech by Marc Morial on themes that Dr. King would speak on were he alive today.

Organizers say that the celebration and ceremony is an important way to remember those who have fought for their rights.

The event is free and open to the public.
