There are still limitations when it comes to tourism in Louisiana. But in Iberia Parish, if you look hard enough, there are ways to enjoy yourself while practicing social distancing safety.
Louisiana tourism took a huge hit during the pandemic. And as things slowly reopen the first wave of tourists will have to be us. Heading to Iberia parish, there are a number of ways you can spend a day taking in sites that people from around the world enjoy.
You can start on New Iberia's historic Main Street. Although the Shadows on the Teche hasn't reopened, the mossy oaks provide cool shade as you walk past. Continue west on Main and see the ongoing work for the future George Rodrigue Park. You can stop in the recently reopened Bayou Teche Museum. Take a walk across the Bayou on Bridge Street, then come back to Bouligny Plaza and Church Alley. There are plenty of places to grab a bite..do take out and have lunch at City Park, then burn off the calories with a walk along the path..if you haven't eaten too much!
Outside of New Iberia you have several options. In Jeanerette, you can grab some freshly baked french bread at the historic Lejeunes Bakery. The trails and the waters are open at Lake Fausee Point State Park. Jefferson Island's Rip Van winkle Gardens are open as well as Cafe Jefferson, with limited seating.
Unfortunately, the crown jewel of Iberia parish is still closed. Avery Island with it's Tabasco Factory and Museum are still evaluating when they'll reopen. The Conrad Rice Mill is opening on July 6th, but the Konriko Company store is open!
The visitor's center on Highway 14 has reopened. You can find information at www.iberiatravel.com. For places that are closed, there are virtual visits. You can find those on theIberia Travel Facebook page.
