Working your way northward through Maringouin and Livonia along winding roads, you'll eventually reach LA 1 and False River, an oxbow lake created by the ever changing course of the Mississippi.

On your way, you'll pass by Parlange Plantation. On the National Register of Historic Places, it's a private residence with deep connections to Louisiana's past. The home was built around 1750 and is used today as a cattle and sugar cane plantation. It's still owned and operated by descendants of the original owners and tours of the home can be scheduled for a fee. Across the street is the Point Coupee Parish Museum. It's a rare Creole log cabin house dating back to the early 1800s.

You'll pass beautiful oaks, new and old lake homes along False River until you reach New Roads. Don't let the city's name fool you, because it's actually some of the oldest of Louisiana roads that crossed here.

It dates back to the early 1700s where a trading post founded by French settlers northeast of the town. In 1822 Catherine Dispau, a free woman of color, created the initial few blocks from her plantation. Today, there are signs that time has stood still. False River of course has become a playground of sorts. swimming, boating and fishing are popular. as well as relaxing at lake houses along the shore.

For the shopper, New Roads is a goldmine for antique shopping. Several boutiques and shops line Main Street. You certainly won't go hungry. From casual cuisine to more upscale, you'll find a delicious meal with a view. You can make the trip for the day, or rent a lake house for a longer stay. It may be a bit off the beaten path, but you can enjoy the rich history of Creole Louisiana, while enjoying a view like no other!
