NEW IBERIA — Around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, Rose Davis was awoken by her six year old and nine year old granddaughters, who smelled smoke coming from the other room.
Nine year old Sidnija, one of Davis's five grandchildren who was living in the house, ran into her older brother Braxton's room; he was celebrating his 15th birthday.
"It was just smoking....the whole house was smoking," Sidnija explained.
Davis said she believes the smoke was coming from one of the walls located near their water heater. Though the New Iberia Fire Department has not made an official statement about what exactly started the fire, Davis and her family believe this may have something to do with it.
"When I woke up, the first thing I was thinking was 'Just make sure everybody gets out the house safely,'" Davis recalled. "Get out the house, get out the house, get out the house."
Now, Davis and her five grandchildren are living in a hotel in New Iberia. According to the New Iberia Fire Department, this is an ongoing investigation. We will update this page as new information arises.
