CECILIA — An icon of Louisiana high school football has died.
James Waguespack died Monday at a Lafayette hospital. He was 76.
Waguespack, a 2019 inductee into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame, is the only coach in Louisiana history to lead two separate teams to undefeated state championship campaigns. He first accomplished the feat at his St. James, his Alma Mater, in 1979. He did it again in 1995 when he coached Cecilia to its only state title victory. Waguespack won two other state championships at St. James--one as a player and the other as an assistant coach. He also won a state championship as an assistant coach. Waguespack ended his career coaching at Beau Chêne, leading that school to the playoffs in 2005 and 2007 before retiring in 2012.
Waguespack had a career record of 235-151.
