From scrunchies to fanny packs to high-waisted jeans, 1980s fashion has been making a big comeback in recent years. And now, the quintessential hair accessory of the ’80s is also back.

That’s right, banana clips have become trendy again!

Named for their curved, banana-like shape, banana clips were huge in the ’80s. Perfect for the big permed hair of that decade, the clips allowed you to sweep back your hair on either side to create a lifted, volumized “ponytail” effect without a traditional hair tie.

The result was an unfussy yet glamorous pony that had lots of Brigitte Bardot volume (or, for a more ’80s/’90s reference, lots of Kelly Kapowski va-va-voom). Best of all, it worked great for every hair type: Curly, straight, thinning, thick — or crimped, of course — the banana clip could handle it all, no matter how much White Rain we spritzed into our ‘dos.

As you can see in this tweet from @AngiePoirier, even Kristen Bell has demonstrated that the banana clip can still be chic, even in the 21st century.

The banana clip is now trending on social media, with people celebrating the return of the famous ’80s hair accessory that we all had stashed in our Caboodles.

Twitter user @BEEingTheLight is seriously feeling this new-old look.

And apparently, Google searches for banana clips have increased in the last year, along with searches on Pinterest for tips on styling with hair clips, according to Twitter user @BTtoronto.

So, what do you need to know about styling a banana clip? If you missed the trend the first time around or if you forgot how to work one of these babies, not to worry. There are plenty of fun YouTube tutorials that can help you create all sorts of styles with just a banana clip.

Below is a YouTube tutorial from Quiesha Jay, in which you’ll learn how to create a “high puff” with a banana clip.

Or check out this tutorial from Chelsea Frances for a sleek but voluminous ponytail, similar to what Kristen Bell rocked during her appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live“.

So pretty!

You can shop for some new banana clips on Amazon, like this six-pack of sturdy banana clips that come in a variety of colors, available for $12.99.
