If you grew up playing Atari games, your childhood video game fantasies are about to come true, thanks to the new immersive Atari Hotels. These eight hotels will feature augmented and virtual realities to simulate a video game-like experience. They will also have state-of-the-art venues and studios for esports events.
The first Atari Hotel will open in Phoenix, Ariz in spring 2020. The other locations will include Austin, Texas; Chicago, Ill.; Denver, Colo.; Las Vegas, Nev.; San Francisco, Calif.; San Jose, Calif. and Seattle, Wash..
Atari Hotels are designed by Shelly Murphy’s GSD Group and Napoleon Smith III, producer of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie franchise reboot. The first Atari-branded hotel in Phoenix will be developed by local real estate developer True North Studio along with GSD Group and Woz Innovation Foundation, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s nonprofit dedicated to giving kids access to innovative STEM curriculums.
While details are still scarce about what the hotels have to offer, it looks like the buildings will combine a nostalgic old-school arcade feel with a more modern look.
“Let’s face it, how cool will it be to stay inside an Atari?” Smith asked in a statement.
The new hotels will try to attract the more than 2.5 billion gamers around the world. Atari says one trend is that these gamers are attracted to recognizable intellectual properties, so this might be the right time for such a venture.
“We are thrilled to partner with GSD Group andTrue North Studio to build the first-ever Atari branded hotels across the United States,” Fred Chesnais, CEO of Atari, said in astatement. “Together we’ll build a space that will be much more than just a place to stay. Atari is an iconic global brand that resonates with people of all ages, countries, cultures and ethnic backgrounds and we cannot wait for our fans and their families to enjoy this new hotel concept.”
Launched in 1972, Atari was a pioneer in the arcade games, home video game consoles and home computer game industries. Some of their most popular games included Pong, Asteroids and Missile Command. Along with being fun for all ages, the new Atari Hotels are sure to be a great trip down memory lane for those who grew up playing these old-school video games in the 1980s.
