Overdue fisherman found dead in Louisiana waterway

AMITE CITY, La. (AP) — A 66-year-old Louisiana man has died in a boating accident in Tangipahoa Parish.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries recovered the body of Edward Ridgel, of Tickfaw, from South Manchac pass on Thursday.

News outlets report family members called authorities Wednesday to report Ridgel as missing. He launched his boat from North Pass Landing that morning to go fishing but never returned.

A commercial crab fishermen spotted an unmanned 16-foot aluminum vessel in South Pass Manchac around 7:15 a.m. Thursday. Agents arrived on scene and found Ridgel’s body about 30 feet from the boat. Authorities say Ridgel was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of his recovery.

It’s unclear how Ridgel ended up in the water. The parish Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
