Man, 57, gets 50 years for killing, burning body

COVINGTON, La. (AP) — A 57-year-old Louisiana man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his estranged longtime girlfriend and burning her body.

District Attorney Warren Montgomery said in a news release Wednesday that Gary Harris was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years for manslaughter in the death of 42-year-old Nanette King and 10 years for obstructing justice.

Spokeswoman Lisa Page says Harris had been charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the reduced charges on Feb. 14. On Feb. 7, his 67-year-old brother pleaded guilty as an accessory after the fact.

Montgomery says state District Judge Raymond Childress sentenced Ray Harris to five years for helping Gary Harris get away and hide evidence.

Both are from Bush, about 45 miles (75 km) north of New Orleans.
