Man tries to revoke guilty plea, gets 30 years in slaying

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana man unsuccessfully tried to revoke his guilty plea to manslaughter and has been sentenced to the agreed-upon 30 years in prison. Times-Picayune reports a New Orleans judge on Wednesday handed down the sentence and denied the plea withdraw request by Anthony Eugene III. Eugene pleaded guilty to the 2014 fatal shooting of 23-year-old Rebecca DeMuth as part of a deal in November.

His defense attorney, Michael Kennedy, requested the plea be withdrawn days later, saying Eugene didn’t have time to consider the deal.

Eugene has been in state Department of Corrections custody since he pleaded guilty in 2015 to possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. DeMuth was a co-defendant in that case.
