Deputies with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a fire at a church in Opelousas on Tuesday morning.

Deputies say that firefighters from the St. Landry Fire District #3 responded to a call of the fire at 1:45 this morning at Greater Union Baptist Church. The church is located in the 1400 block of Hwy 742 in Opelousas.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says that this is the third fire at a religious building that SFM has investigated in a week. The fire is the second in St. Landry Parish.

KATC’s Abby Breidenbach was on the scene of the fire this morning.

Firefighters tell us that they responded to the fire in about five minutes but quickly realized that the building could not be saved.

Church Pastor Harry Richard says that foul play is believed to have played a part in the fire. An investigation is currently underway with the State Fire Marshal’s Office
