A 23-year-old Elton man was shot to death in Eunice last night, according to Chief of Police Randy Fontenot.

Police received a call at 1:46 am Monday from Mercy Regional Medical Center in Eunice that a gunshot victim had been brought to the emergency room.

The investigation revealed that the victim was shot as he was exiting his vehicle at the residence of one of the passengers in the vehicle on W. Vine. Avenue, according to Fontenot. The suspect vehicle drove off after the shooting. Witnesses gave only a dark-colored vehicle as the description of the suspect vehicle.

The victim, Oshae Doffney, died from his wounds at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Doris Hebert and her 4-year-old granddaughter live just doors down from where a deadly shooting happened.

“The stray bullets can hit some innocent people,” Hebert said.” God forbid it hits my little Granddaughter.”

“It’s like you stay nervous and tense all night,” Hebert said. “It’s very scary because you don’t know if they’re going to be shooting at you or your kids. It’s terrible to think, one day you’re here and you never know who’s here the next day.”

While the two have only been in the neighborhood for a few months, Hebert says hearing gunshots are common.

While the investigation continues, neighbors like Hebert hope to hear fewer gunshots, for the sake of the children who live in the neighborhood.

“Whoever the deceased is, God, help them,” Hebert said. “God help all of us because we really don’t know if we’re going to live from one day to the next.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Eunice Police Department at (337) 457-2626. All callers will remain anonymous.
