At 3:23 pm today, Lafayette firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the 3000 block of West Congress Street.

The driver of the vehicle called fire dispatch reporting the vehicle stalled and began smoking. When firefighters arrived, the engine compartment was fully involved. All passengers were out safely, fire officials said.

The driver, an Uber operator, was transporting one passenger when his vehicle began to malfunction. When he stopped, smoke began emitting from the engine compartment. Both he and passenger got out of the vehicle, fire officials said.

The vehicle sustained heavy fire damage. The cause of the fire was not determined. However, it did originate in the engine compartment, fire officials said.
